
The Shira Route is one of the lesser-known paths up Kilimanjaro and is quite scenic and unique. It begins at the Shira Gate on the western side of the mountain and is generally considered a more gradual ascent compared to some other routes. The Shira Plateau offers breathtaking views and diverse landscapes, ranging from moorland to alpine desert. The route is known for having a relatively high starting point, which helps with acclimatization. The Shira Route can be done in 6 or 7 days, and it offers a great balance between scenic beauty and a manageable climb. It’s also less crowded than some of the more popular routes, making it a peaceful option. Your trek begins at the high-altitude Shira Gate (3,500m). Youʼll hike for 5 – 6 hours across the heather-covered moorland to reach Shira 1 Camp. Because of the high start, the air is crisp and the views of the Shira Plateau are beautiful right from the beginning.
This is a relaxing 4–5 hour trek deeper into the Shira Plateau. Youʼll walk through high-altitude meadows and cross several streams. This gentle ascent across the plateau is perfect for helping your body adjust to the altitude while enjoying views of Kibo peak.

Today is a key day for acclimatization. You will hike toward the massive Lava Tower for lunch, reaching a peak altitude of 4,630m. Afterward, youʼll descend into the stunning Barranco Valley. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps your body prepare for the summit.
The morning starts with a fun scramble up the famous Barranco Wall. Once you reach the top, youʼll be rewarded with incredible views. The rest of the 4–5 hour hike involves crossing several ridges and valleys to reach Karanga Camp.

Youʼll move into the alpine desert today, trekking for 4 – 5 hours up a steady ridge to reach Barafu Camp. This is your final camp before the summit attempt. Youʼll have an early dinner and rest as much as possible before your midnight start.
Starting at midnight, youʼll climb the steep volcanic scree to reach Uhuru Peak as the sun rises over Africa. After celebrating at the summit, youʼll begin the long descent back to Barafu for lunch and then continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.

On your final day, youʼll enjoy a pleasant 4–5 hour descent through the lush, oxygen-rich rainforest. At the Mweka Gate, youʼll sign out and receive your summit certificate before being driven back to the hotel for a well-deserved celebration.
