Mount Oldoinyo Lengai is a pretty fascinating volcano in Tanzania. Oldoinyo Lengai means the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language and it’s located in the Gregory Rift of the East African Rift System. It is the only active volcano that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, which is quite different from the more common basaltic lava. Plus, it’s often seen as a sacred site by the local Maasai people.
Oldoinyo Lengai stands at about 2,878 meters above sea level. It’s famous for its cool, black lava flows that are really rare. The volcano has erupted several times in recent history, with the most recent eruptions happening in the 2000s and 2010s. It’s also a popular destination for adventurous hikers.
The drivefrom Arusha to Oldoinyo Lengai is a rugged 5 to 6-hour journey that takes you off the beaten path and deep into the heart of the Great Rift Valley. As you leave the tarmac behind, the road becomes a bumpy track through Maasai heartland, where you’ll likely spot zebras, giraffes, and Maasai herders tending their livestock against a backdrop of ancient volcanic craters. Upon arriving at the base camp, you will meet your local Lengai village guides. Since the climb starts in the middle of the night, you’ll head to bed early to get as much rest as possible.
The climb begins around midnight to avoid the extreme daytime heat of the Rift Valley. It is a very steep and challenging 5–7 hour trek on loose volcanic ash. You’ll reach the summit (2,878m) just in time for a spectacular sunrise over Lake Natron. After exploring the crater and seeing the unique lava formations, you’ll descend back to base camp for breakfast and a well-earned nap.

After resting from the climb, you’ll head to the nearby Engare Sero Waterfalls. It’s a refreshing walk through a gorge to reach the falls, where you can swim in the natural pools. Later, you'll visit Lake Natron to see the massive colonies of pink flamingos and enjoy the starkly beautiful, salty landscape.
After breakfast, you’ll have one last chance to soak in the views of the "Mountain of God" before departing. You might visit a local Maasai boma (village) to learn about their culture before being driven back to Arusha or your next destination.
