Mount Meru stands at 4,562 meters, making it Tanzania’s second-highest peak after Kilimanjaro. It’s also the fifth-highest mountain in Africa. Located in Arusha National Park, it offers a stunning, diverse landscape that ranges from lush forests to alpine deserts. The mountain is renowned for its breathtaking views, including a panoramic vista of Kilimanjaro in the distance on clear days. The hike itself is known for being both challenging and rewarding, with unique scenery at every stage. The mountain also has a rich ecosystem, so you might spot a variety of wildlife like giraffes, buffaloes, and monkeys along the way. Your trek begins at the Momella Gate after park registration. You will hike for 4 - 6 hours through a lush montane forest. Since this is a walking safari, keep your eyes open for buffaloes, giraffes, and warthogs grazing in the clearings. You will arrive at Miriakamba Hut in time to enjoy a beautiful sunset over the plains.
Today is a shorter but steeper climb that takes 3–5 hours. You will leave the forest and enter the moorland zone, passing through "Elephant Ridge" which offers great views of the crater. After a hot lunch at Saddle Hut, you can take a short 1-hour acclimatization hike up Little Meru (3,820m) for incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The summit push starts around 2:00 AM. You will climb steeply to Rhino Point and then follow a dramatic, narrow ridge of ash and rock to reach Socialist Peak (4,566m) for sunrise. The views of the ash cone inside the crater are spectacular. After celebrating, you will descend back to Saddle Hut for brunch and continue down to Miriakamba Hut for the night.
On your final day, you will take a direct route back down through the forest and open grasslands. This is a great time to spot any wildlife you might have missed on the way up, such as colobus monkeys or zebras. After 2–3 hours, you will reach the gate to receive your certificate and meet your driver.
